Lac is the resinous secretion of a number of species of lac insects, of which the most commonly cultivated species is Lacca Cocca. The insects can be cultivated on either on a wide variety of trees. In India, which is a significant producer of lac, especially lac dye, the most common host trees are:
- Dhak (Butea monosperma)
- Ber (Ziziphus mauritiana)
- Kusum (Schleichera oleosa)
We use Lac Black dyestuff to obtain two shades of purple.
